Catching Up-Pets

Next up in April, we went to Illinois (though we stayed in Iowa--we were right on the border) to pick up the newest member of our family.  I had found through a rescue up there a full-blooded rottweiler puppy.  Sean grew up with rotts and really wanted one since we'd decided it was time to add a dog to the mix.
It was a nice little weekend getaway for Sean and I when we went to pick her up.
We walked along the Mississippi and had a wonderful dinner in Keokuk, IA, which is where we stayed.

When we met Roxie, we were instantly in love.  She's a wonderful puppy and has been such a great addition to our family!
She had been bred for a pet store, but they won't accept puppies with "deficiencies".  Because Roxie's nose is rounded on top instead of boxed off like rotts are supposed to be, she'd been rejected (along with her brothers and sisters, who had already been adopted).
The pet store's loss was our gain: a full blooded rott at adoption price!  Elise was instantly her best buddy, and they've remained besties--now that Roxie is fully potty trained, she sleeps in Elise's room.  Plus, Elise sleeps like a rock and Roxie snores (the nose thing :))
Roxie wasn't the only pet this spring.  Elise had a toad who had been her " pet" last year, and who came back after hibernation.  Buddy, as she named him, let her cart him around, and as long as she put him back in his "home" (near our crawl space), he was always there for her to find.  Until the day she had him out in the other part of the yard and forgot to put him back.  He hopped away, never to be found again.
Erin wasn't as sure about Roxie at first and took quite a while to warm up to her.  But they both talk to her in baby voices now and say "that's my good Roxie girl".
The good thing about Elise forgetting to put Buddy back in his home: we didn't have to find him torn to shred by his new yard mate :)She loved him though, so I am glad I got some pics of her with him.  Even if he grossed me out.
We also got the excitement of getting to watch baby birds hatch right on our front porch!  It was a popular hangout for the kids waiting for the bus--and everyone took pics as they grew.
There ended up being 3 baby birds, but I forgot to take pictures--or if I did, I can't find them on my new phone!
A little out of order, but sweet Roxie again.
Elise loves animals--I wouldn't be surprised if she became a veterinarian.  When visiting the fire station, she came walking up to us with this bird that had flew into the bay window.  Sean and I both freaked out, thinking it was diseased, but it let her hold it and she was very easy.
Sean talked her into setting him down outside in the grassy area, and he must've just been stunned, because after a few minutes, he flew away!

Catching Up-Easter 2015

I may or may not have fallen a little (a lot) behind on my blogging.  For all the people (3) who read it (sorry, Chad), I'm going to make an effort to catch up this week!  It isn't that we've not been doing anything, it's actually the opposite: we've been busy!
Let's start with Easter!
These pictures loaded in reverse order of the events of the weekend, but I'm going to roll with it.  We finished the weekend at Nan and Pop's.  The kids had their annual pinata smack down, which was popular, as always.

There are a lot of littles running around hunting eggs anymore--and we were missing two of them!

Saturday was Easter at MawMaw and PawPaw's.  This is the last picture of when there were only 4!
We also went to a church Easter egg hunt at the church we've been going to occasionally.  We're not convinced it is for us, but we're feeling unmoved to look hard for another option.  The girls like it a lot, Sean and I are the ones who struggle to feel like it's "home".

They do put on one awesome Easter celebration, though!

Jackson Family Update

It's been a wild and crazy time at the Jackson house lately (the above picture will serve as proof), and I've fallen behind (as I tend to do) on the blog!
Valentine's Day was mostly a success--Elise designed and created (almost completely on her own) an awesome V-day box.  And I don't mean to be judgmental towards parents who do 97% of the work on their kids V-day boxes (okay, yes, I do), but those parents obviously don't think about the kid who worked so hard on their own box, but feel like a failure because it isn't an elaborate peacock or other such nonsense.  Thankfully, Elise has a healthy dose of self-confidence, and once we pointed out that she had done the hard work herself and made a gorgeous box, she got over her sadness that her box wasn't as "cool" as her classmate's.

Just a cute pics of the girls abusing their great-grandfather
We had a fairly major injury involving a child in the Jackson household: Miss Erin had a fight with the playground and the playground won.
Stage one, day of injury--chipped front left tooth, and loose front right tooth, not to mention the swollen lips.
Stage 2, day after injury, post-extraction
Stage 3, 1 week after injury, NEW TEETH!
Aside from refusing to eat the day of the incident or the day after any dental work was done through the process, Erin was a trooper.  She was also on an antibiotic through this same time period for an ear infection that cropped up suddenly the Friday before.  Luckily our cute yahoo is back in business.  She'll have the partials in as space savers until she's seven--won't be able to have gum, gummies, taffy, skittles, or anything sticky until then.  Poor kid.

Erin has really taken to being Owen's buddy.  She requested to "sit by" (she knows he's gotten too big for her to hold) Baby Owen in the above pic.  And in the below pic, she had been reading a book to him, and as I grabbed my phone to take a photo, she leaned down to give him a hug.  Melt.

2014 in retrospect

We rang in 2014 in much more exciting fashion than we're ringing in 2015: with an Ugly Sweater party with friends.  Sadly, that was really the only big party we hosted in 2014.  We love to host our friends, but things took a bit of an unexpected turn in the spring for us, and we had to cut down on our festivities.  I've talked before about that unexpected turn (deciding to quit my job), so I won't bore you with the details again here.  Suffice to say that it had a big impact on our year!
Easter was a fun affair--we spent time with family at MawMaw and PawPaw's.
Our baby graduated to a toddler bed in April.  She did really well with the transition, though some nights we long for the days when we could "cage" her in the crib and know where she was!
Our big girl graduated from preschool in May.
We got a great picture with the girls and Sean, his dad, and his grandpa.
Starting my own business didn't go exactly as planned, and I spent a lot of time hanging out with the girls.  I definitely treasured my time with them!  I was also definitely ready to go back to work when the opportunity came later in the year!
Babies were born!  Aiden (Stephanie's baby boy) was born in February, then the excitement of TWO BABIES being born on the SAME DAY happened in July!  Gage Wingo started the party, and Owen Kelb (with the girls above) arrived just a few hours later!  All the boys were so joyously welcomed!
Kindergarten.  For real.  I have a kindergartener?
We got to have several slumber parties with Link this year, and we loved every time.  The girls wish for him when he's not around (though they do tend to fuss a lot with him when he is here!)
I got together a Stevens family reunion this year.  I grew up hanging out with all of my cousins at least once a year--but it had been quite some time since we had a get-together.  We had 60+ of the 100+ family members attend, and it was a great time!
Whippoorwill Holler Fall Festival took a kid-friendly turn--luckily these little cuties (Gage, pictured above with his Momma and me, and Owen) were welcomed additions to the festival!
While it was definitely one of the most challenging years of our life together, 2014 still gave us so much to be thankful for--we are incredibly blessed, and so excited to see what 2015 has in store for us!  Blessings to you and yours!

Elise's 6th Birthday

On the bus, in the farthest parking lot ever, getting ready to go to SDC
We gave Elise a choice for her birthday this year: have a party, or go to Silver Dollar City.  I feel like she chose wisely.  Even though when we first got to the park, I had to wonder!
Daddy is obviously thrilled to be there.
Silver Dollar City was PACKED.  I have never parked so far away, nor have I ever had to stand and wait to proceed through Grandfather's Mansion.  Both of those things happened during this trip.
Waiting to ride one of the few rides we decided to wait for.
But it was beautiful!  It wasn't too chilly and we were appropriately bundled for the weather.  The lights were amazing.  We got to eat so much delicious food, some of which (like the apple dumplings) is only available at Christmas.  And the girls absolutely loved the parade.
Selfie Win
Honestly, after the parade, the place cleared out some, and it didn't feel nearly so claustrophobic.  The girls didn't mind the crowds, but they did make me nervous.  Erin didn't want to hold our hands for the most part, and she's little, quick, and easily lost.  But we were lucky and didn't have any scares.  And by the end, she was so pooped we carried her anyway.
Selfie Fail.
There were lots of familiar faces in the crowd--Uncle Dave texted us that he and Loriell were down there and we met up with them for a bit.
Erin and Uncle Dave watching Elise and Loriell ride the swing
This next series of pictures cracked me up.  I was trying to take a cute picture of the girls in front of a lighted Christmas tree...it didn't work out that well.
There's the tackle-hug

Then there's the awkward family photo.

Their eyes are almost closed, but they're looking in the right direction with smiles on their faces!

Elise trying to stay upright in Grandfather's mansion.  Can you tell it was crowded??
Will, Jessie, and Owen met us down there, too.  Elise was really excited to see them!
On her actual birthday (Friday), Elise got to take cupcakes to school, Mammy surprised her with a happy meal at lunch, and Daddy, me, and Erin took her on a drive to look at Christmas lights that night and capped it off with Andy's!  Today, we had lunch at Mammy's, and she got to blow out candles on an ice cream cake.  She said tonight it was a really good birthday!

Thanksgivings

Grandpa taking the girls on a walk
Our Tour de Thanksgivings begins at Grandma and Grandpa Jackson's house.  Most of the family had other plans, but we wanted to get together with them to celebrate--especially since we didn't have any other plans that day!  We had a wonderful visit and the girls had so much fun having Grandma and Grandpa to themselves.
Erin did NOT want her picture taken.  Sigh.
The Stevens family Thanksgiving was on Saturday this year.  I know there was some grumbling from some about not having Thanksgiving on the actual day, but I was actually pretty happy with it.  It gave us more time to spend with family without having to rush off to the next place!  We had a big turnout and the kids had so much fun together!
A nice family picture with the girls in the tree I used to play in!

A few of the great-grandchildren
Our final Thanksgiving was on Sunday at MawMaw and PawPaw's house.  We had the most beautiful weather, and PawPaw was on the tractor when we got there, so the girls had to have a ride!

Claire was styling!

The temperature started to drop in the afternoon, but the kids still wanted to play outside!
I hope everyone had a blessed Thanksgiving with much to be thankful for--I know we did!

Transitions

If you follow this blog even kind of regularly, you know that I rarely use it as a platform for extensive writing.  But I felt compelled to share my story about going from a full-time working mother to a full-time stay-at-home mother, and back again.  So if you are just here to check out new pictures of the girls, blow on by this post.

Going back to work was hard.  Please, don’t get me wrong.  But it was also the easiest thing I have ever done.  Contradictory?  Yes.  But allow me to explain:

When I had my babies, I really enjoyed my maternity leave with both of them.  I had the conversation fairly often with Sean that I really wanted to be able to stay home full-time at some point, but we both knew when we decided to have children that financially we were still years away from being where we needed to be for me to stay home and for us to remain comfortable money-wise.  So, knowing that there was a “someday” out there, I was able to go back to work from both of my maternity leaves with a smile on my face (even if there were tears in my eyes).

Fast forward to March 2014.  I was not happy in my work situation (not a good fit for me).  I had been tossing around the idea with Sean about quitting my job to become an independent HR consultant.  I felt like the timing was right since we had recently downsized our house payment, and Sean agreed that it would be fine to try, but warned me that we only had 6 months worth of savings that would allow me to make NO money.  I excitedly quit my job, feeling confident that I would be securing contracts within a few months, and we wouldn’t have to worry about that 6 month deadline.  Another reason I was so excited for this entrepreneurial adventure?  I was going to be able to spend a lot more time with the girls!

I hit the ground running with my business—I created the LLC, I set up a website and ordered the business cards, and I joined the Chamber of Commerce and started attending every networking event possible.  I had a few “high potential” clients in mind before I even quit my job, and I started having meetings with them.  Part of quitting my job meant the girls quit daycare, but I was fine with that because Sean could watch them when I went to meetings and events since he had a rotating schedule.  But most of the time, I was with them.  And by most of the time, I mean that quickly turned into all of the time.  I love my girls dearly, but I discovered that my patience level wasn’t as high as I thought—and I never was that confident about my patience level anyway!

One way I tried to alleviate the tension was to have learning time with Elise while Erin napped.  She was about to start kindergarten, and I wanted to continue to build on the great foundation she had received at preschool and daycare.  This was usually a treasured time for me, because she was easily distracted by the activity, but I wasn’t feeling guilty about her having too much TV time, so I got some of the chores done.

Speaking of chores: do you know how hard it is to keep a house clean when 3 of you are there ALL. THE. TIME?  And a 4th one (Sean) is there 2/3 of the time?  I would clean one area of the house, only to move on to another area that was completely trashed.  When I walked back through the previously clean area, the girls would have destroyed it.  It was never ending.  It was exhausting.  And as I hit a brick wall in my business, I was also feeling trapped at home.

When Sean and I finally had to sit down and have the talk in August about finances and what we were going to do after October hit, I wasn’t even that upset about searching for jobs.  I felt disappointed that I hadn’t been able to make my business work (turns out I am great at HR but terrible at sales) and sad that I wasn’t going to be able to do some of the things I’d enjoyed doing with the girls when I was home, sure.  While we fussed with each other a lot, we also had a good time walking to the park, playing in the yard, and doing art projects.  But I was also relieved to imagine the budget constraints being lifted, and to have some much-needed adult time on a regular basis.

When I accepted the offer for my new job, I felt like I finally had the perfect fit.  It was a full time job, but it afforded me a lot of paid time off with holidays and vacation.  I was going to be able to continue to work in a career I love, but also spend more quality time with my children than I had been able to in my previous jobs.  It seemed like answered prayers.  And honestly, so far, it really was.

But as with all things in life, it sometimes seems, this gift came at a price.  This time, going back to work was a much bigger adjustment than after either of my maternity leaves.  For one, I had spent SIX MONTHS at home with the girls, not just 8-12 weeks.  They were older.  They actually understood that I wasn’t going to be around as much.  Erin was especially upset by this because, at not quite 2 ½, she simply didn’t remember a time when I wasn’t home with her.  The week before I started my new job, we did a “trial run” at daycare by taking her 3 half-days.  She bawled each time I dropped her off, and I struggled to hold myself together each of those days, too.  But again, as with most things in life, once she got used to the situation, she adjusted.  By mid-week of my first week back to work, she didn’t even bat an eye when I dropped her off and ran straight in to play.

I guess the point of this rambling (aside from documenting a very interesting point in our family's history) is this: being a mom is tough.  When you're working full-time, you miss your kids terribly and think constantly of things you might be missing out on with them.  When you're staying home with your kids, you dream of a time when you will again be able to be productive in a career and actually have disposable income and won't have to tell your kiddos they can't do the activities they want to because you don't have enough money.  I share this story mainly to tell my sweet friends (both the stay-at-home and working mothers) that I applaud your efforts.  I, for one, am happy to be back in the working world--even if I am missing my girls during any lull in the day.

Thanks for sticking out this blog post with me--I promise I'll be back to posting cute pictures of my kiddos in no time!
